Too often we allow ourselves to disengage with, and even victimise, the weakest members of our community because we simply don’t understand how and why they live the life they do.
The Sydney Uni Young Vinnies Society believes that a deficiency of compassion breeds an attitude of inaction. That’s why, with the support of your University of Sydney Union (USU) and St Vincent de Paul, we provide a diverse range of volunteer opportunities for students interested in giving back to their community and understanding the issues facing the disadvantaged from a more direct perspective.
WHAT SERVICES DO WE PROVIDE?
One night a month USYD Young Vinnies manages St Vincent de Paul's Night Patrol van. Night Patrol involves a group of volunteers heading out to Martin Place in the city in a special Vinnies van and providing the homeless of Sydney's inner-city with a light meal and some intriguing conversation. USYD Young Vinnies also coordinates Brekkie Van on a weekend morning at Prince Alfred Park next to Central Station. Every year we also run a Winter Sleep out Program, granting us insight into what it is like to live on the streets and rely on the kindness of others for support. The 2009 USYD Winter Sleepout was also the recipient of the Best Major Event from the University of Sydney Union. These experiences give students the opportunity to chat with the homeless of Sydney’s inner-city over a cup of tea, providing companionship to one of Sydney's most vulnerable populations.
We also run programs supporting the disadvantaged youth, kids aged 6-12 and teens aged 13-15, taking them on Buddies Days in the local area to the beach or the park, or other excursions.
HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?
If you're interested in getting more involved, please come along to one of our regular committee meetings, or chat to one of the executive at Night Patrol or Brekky Van.
Email us if you're interested in anything specific.
We look forward to working with you all,
